The photograph has long been heralded as the ultimate form of evidence, a witness to reality that, unlike the human witness, is fully backed by the seeming objectivity of science. And yet, as Kiev-based photographer Vic Bakin shows in his editorial, the form also presents the opportunity for illusion, for ambiguity: In a given frame, what is it that we aren’t seeing? And why aren’t we seeing it? Laden in a mix of Margiela and tactical wear and arranged in poses that are sometimes intimate and sometimes not, Bakin’s subjects seem to raise more questions than answers. They invoke a story that mirrors the intrinsic character of photography itself.
