LCD Soundsystem’s synth musician and percussionist Gavin Russom announced herself as transgender at the age of 43. In another positive move towards normalising society’s view on transgender, Grindr published the interview right before the release of the band’s new album and tour. Although the synth dance band split in 2011, they announced a come back album American Dream, which will be available in September.

Russom released the interview in hopes of encouraging young fans to embrace their true identity. Slowly coming out as transgender earlier this year, Russom says “This is my fifth decade being alive,” she stated in the Grindr interview, “and in each of those decades, there’s been a time where I’ve tried to say, ‘Hey, I think I’m transgender!’ This was even before that word existed.”

Russom stated the accepting influence of the dance and club culture as a main factor in her decision as coming out as transgender. “It gives me hope for the future to see the courage and creativity of a much younger generation of trans women,” Russom said. “Clubs are where I’ve encountered a lot of that.”
