Think of contemporary British fashion design and the psychedelic prints and avant-garde cuts of recently established star designers of the fashion sphere such as Mary Katrantzou, Jonathan Saunders and Katy Eary will spring to mind. With their unusual and extraordinary approach they have dominated the British fashion scene of the last few years and reaffirmed London’s status as the centre of sartorial extravagance. But a closer look at the newest generation of international fashion graduates trained in the UK reveals that, contrary to the eccentric style of their forebears, the up and coming designers of today also know how to playfully attract attention with clear cuts, reducing their colour palate to white, grey and black, and focusing on the knowing use of geometrical shapes, creating interesting structure with sophisticated modern laser cut techniques, as well as experimenting with classic cuts. London is not going to lose its reputation as the hotbed of extreme fashion design in a hurry, but this selection of most interesting graduate collections, from Royal College of Art to London College of Fashion, proves that subtle refinement can be just as revolutionary.
We asked the young talents to join the models in our portrait shoot on the following pages.
